A great way to explore the Bahamas is to book one of the many tours and excursions available in Nassau and Freeport, the main tourist centers of the Bahamas. The Bahamas is an archipelago of over 700 islands that starts 60 miles off the east coast of Florida and stretches 550 miles southeast to the edge of the Caribbean Sea. Out of 30 inhabited islands, 20 of them are heavily developed for tourism, with New Providence Island and Grand Bahama serving as the principal ports.
With no sales tax and low tariffs, the Bahamas offer bargain shopping. Some imported goods are priced 30 to 50 percent lower than in the US.
Bahamas capital guided walking tour
The city of Nassau is situated on the North shore of New Providence Island, which is roughly 32 km long and 13 km wide. Around 180 nautical miles southeast of Miami Florida, it is home to almost a quarter of a million people.
There are plenty of ways to get to know Nassau with only a day of stay. One of the best and most popular tours is the guided walking tour of Nassau with a Bahama host. This is a local professional guide, trained by the Ministry of Tourism, who can take groups of up to 10 people on one hour walking around two different areas of the historic part of Nassau.
Either on the tour or exploring on your own, you will see the pretty 19th century colonial buildings of Parliament Square just off Bay Street housing the government offices.
The islands became an English colony in 1629, were briefly under Spanish rule in 1782, and finally gained independence from Britain in 1973 as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Continuing south, you will arrive at the Supreme Court building and the pink, octagonal Nassau Public Library, built in 1798. Once a prison, it contains a small collection of Amerindian artifacts.
Parliament Street has come more splendid colonial buildings, most of them dating from the mid 19th century. Further west stand three houses of worship St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, known as the Kirk, the Trinity Methodist Church and Christ Church Cathedral, which has a beautiful stained-glass window above the altar.
A horse-drawn surrey departs from Woods Rogers Walk, at the center, near the ship main port entrance for a 20 minutes clatter along Bay Street and around Old Nassau with a Bahama host trained guide.
Nassau serves as the Bahamas’ capital, as well as its cultural, commercial, and financial hub. Although Nassau is best known as a winter resort and refuge for the rich and famous, it also has a fascinating history and gorgeous attractions to see.
Discover Atlantis and Historical harbor excursion
At Prince George Wharf, you can take a ferry or taxi, either with an organized tour or on your own, to Arawak Cay, and along to Ft Montague observing the many historical points of interest as well as the area’s local flavor. Once known less glamorously as Hog Island, its expensive pleasures number the huge Atlantis Resort and Casino, the Hurricane Hole, a haven for luxury yachts, the Yoga Retreat a 14th century Gothic Cloister brought from France and reconstructed stone by stone, the Versailles Gardens surrounding the exclusive Ocean Club Hotel, Atlantis Casino, Crystal Shopping Court and the 18 – hole championship Ocean Club Golf Course.
Take a Shark Walk Aquaventure Tour into the stunning “Atlantis Dig” which houses tens of thousands of the world’s most unusual fish and sea creatures, as well as Atlantis’ historic artifacts. There is also a crescent-shaped white beach on the back side.
Grand Bahama
Three times the size of New Providence, Grand Bahama sits at the northern end of the Bahamas chain.
Grand Bahama, lies 105 km east of West Palm Beach and 128 km north-east of Miami and has a population of just over 50 000.
Wallace Groves, a Virginian financier, triggered the development of Grand Bahama when he established a timber business on the island in the 1940s. He founded Freeport in the late 1950s.
Freeport orientation Tour
Freeport, the nation’s northernmost island, is not as atmospheric as Nassau, having only come into being in the 1960s. However, it makes a good launching pad for an island that has plenty to offer, from limestone caves and exotic gardens to white sandy beaches and friendly dolphins, from nature walks to Eco-adventures and casinos.
Although most of the attractions of Grand Bahama lie outside town a little way, there are some things to see and do in Freeport. Near the center, you can visit International Bazaar, a large shopping precinct with a few bargains and a good range of photographic equipment, plus a Colombian Emeralds outlet.
To the east of the Bazaar is a straw market, in case you haven’t bought a basket yet, while, on the other side, the Royal Oasis Resort and Casino has a spectacular freshwater pool, a man made white sandy beach and two golf courses.
Freeport Dolphin experience Tour
The Dolphin Encounter at Sanctuary Bay, a 4-acre lagoon, is a short ferry ride from the Underwater Explorers Society dock in Port Lucaya. A bay tour includes a tour of approximately 3 hours during which visitors can have fun in the water in different ways and meet dolphins. It’s a unique experience. After a 20-minute drive from the center of Freeport to Port Lucaya, a 25-minute drive along the scenic south coast will take you to a 9-acre natural lagoon called the Dolphin Experience, home to a pod of bottlenose dolphins. On the viewing platform, the property’s well-trained staff will provide an educational introduction to dolphins and their behavior. The floating pier features a 3 ft deep platform where people may interact with dolphins and snap pictures. The trainers also have the dolphins demonstrating various types of behavior enabling more terrific photo opportunities.
Touring the Rand Nature trails
At the 40 hectare Rand Nature Center, to the north of Freeport, you can follow some interesting nature trails and see a flock of West Indian flamingos. You may also spot a humming bird and the rare olive capped warble. Run by the Bahamas National Trust, this National Park has well-informed guides who will enthusiastically enlighten you on the ecology of the Bahamian forest.
Garden of the Groves Tour
The Garden of the Groves to the east of Freeport and Port Lucaya, is a wondrous botanical garden with animals, and a popular spot for weddings. You can enjoy guided tour through 12 acres of lush tropical flowers and trees, four cascading waterfalls a replica of an 18th century Bahamian House, exotic birds, alligators and even a petting ZOO.
Also, on the property is the Grand Bahama Museum, which exhibits reconstructed caves, Lucayan Amerindian artifacts taken from the National Park caves and pirate paraphernalia.
Lucayan Country Club Tour
At the Lucayan National Park east of the Garden of the Groves, you can explore the caves that form one of the longest charted underwater cave systems in the world. Knowledgeable guides will accompany you to enter the caves by sea or land and see the discovered artifacts and bones relating to the island’s first inhabitants.
A Dick Wilson design is currently rated as one of the top three courses in the Caribbean. Named the “Hidden Jewel” by Wilson himself, all 18 holes are played on wide, well-manicured fairways bordered by dense, heavy foliage.
