Way to make a Travel > World Tours > Essential Tips for Booking Your First Cruise Online
Booking your cruise online is the first big step to your adventure. Make sure you have all the information before hand-in-writting so that you feel comfortable paying your deposit. Give your cruise agent ample time to find the best price and the best ship for you. It takes a little extra effort to design a good cruise package.

Pre-package option
If possible, book a one or two day pre-package before your cruise. That way you have a couple of days to enjoy your port of embarkation before departure. It also allows time for any lost luggage to catch up with you.
Cruise terms
Read all the fine print in the ”terms” portion of the cruise ticket before paying for your cruise. If there is anything you do not understand, have your cruise agent explain it to you until it all makes sense.
Family reservation
When a family is traveling together and two or three cabins are reserved, the name of at least one adult family member must be on each cabin. Once you arrive onboard the ship, little is said if you change the configuration to suit your family needs.
If possible, pay for your cruise with a credit card. If any problems arise, the credit card company can assist in sorting out the situation.
Cruise payment
Even if you have already placed your cruise deposit with a cruise agent, if a better deal comes along with another company for the exact same cruise, you can cancel your reservation with the original agent. But first make sure you are not under any penalty restrictions and that you have investigated the situation thoroughly.

Port charges
Port charges are added to the cost of the cruise and will be reflected in your cruise ticket. These typically are about $50 to $200 per person, depending on the itinerary.
Flight bookings
If you book your own flight arrangement to the ship, be sure not to book a return flight before 12:30 pm. If the disembarkation process is slow or delayed, you may miss your flight, and the cruise line will not be responsible for helping you reschedule another.
Air-sea packages, meaning air ticket purchased through the cruise line, give passengers free transfers to and from the ship.
Insurance
To insure or not to insure is always a question. It is advisable travelers to pay extra money for cruise insurance, no matter what your age.
Life is full of surprises, and sometimes people simply must postpone their vacation. It is well worth the relatively small insurance fee to guarantee a refund in such cases.
Most cruise lines offer insurance at a high rate and do not cover lost luggage, missed cruise connection, or travel delay.
Book a third-party travel insurance package with cruise-specific features for your upcoming voyage, rather than the insurance offered by the cruise line, recommends World of Cruising. Look for plans with high coverage for medical emergencies, including medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and interruption.
Refund policies
Some cruise lines offer insurance and promise to give you a refund no matter what reason you use to cancel. Be aware that this refund could be a future cruise credit with their cruise line and not actual money.
If you cancel your cruise, you will only receive a full voucher if you tell the cruise company in writing at least two months before your departure date. During the holidays, this duration is extended to three months.
Family Plan Insurance
Some travel-insurance companies have an exclusive family plan in which children sixteen years and younger receive full coverage at no additional charge, when accompanied by adults who purchase the policy. You never know what type of medical emergency could occur on your vacation. Buy insurance that covers a medical emergency evacuation from the ship.
