Known for its spectacular rock formations, picturesque valleys and mysterious underground cities, Cappadocia offers unforgettable experiences for nature, history and adventure lovers. One of the most recognizable attractions is flying in colorful hot air balloons, which offer incredible panoramic views and an unforgettable sunrise experience.

History of Cappadocia

Millions of years ago, the Erciyes, Hasandag and Melindiz volcanoes erupted and covered Cappadocia with ashes. Over the millennia, this layer of tuff eroded, giving rise to art forms that inspired rock art, which bears the imprint of ancient civilizations to this day. The first human settlements in Cappadocia date back to the Paleolithic period, while the region’s documented history dates back to the Hittites.

In the Late Miocene, volcanoes erupted beneath the lakes and spewed lava. The lava formed a plateau that was constantly changing due to small eruptions. In the Late Pliocene, the Kizilirmak River and smaller streams and lakes cut deep into the tuff plateau and gradually gave the region its current structure. Wind and precipitation eroded the tuff structure into the valleys, creating formations known as “fairy chimneys” The most common type of “fairy chimney” in Cappadocia are conical rock structures with a cap, either a cone or a mushroom-shaped cap.

First human settlements in Cappadocia

Human settlement in Cappadocia began in prehistoric times, and Assyrian civilization in the region began in the Early Bronze Age. Trade reached its peak during this period, and the oldest written evidence in Anatolia dates from this period. The Cappadocian tablets, written in ancient Assyrian cuneiform, speak of taxes, interest rates, and marriage contracts.

Located on one of the most important trade routes of the Silk Road, Cappadocia has been a crossroads for several philosophies and religions, each of which has left its own historical and cultural mark on the region. Early Christians fleeing Roman persecution sought refuge in the region’s underground cities. The soft rock has allowed for the excavation of ornate houses, food storage facilities, wells and water cisterns, vineyards, and places of worship. These underground settlements existed before Christ and have always provided a refuge for all those seeking peace and quiet.

Churches and monasteries in Cappadocia

Churches and monasteries are examples of artificial caves dug into the rock with great work and craftsmanship. There are about 1,000 churches in Cappadocia. The construction, architectural intricacies, artistic design and decorations are breathtaking.

Many churches have a basilica or cruciform plan with a central nave, a narthex, columns and domes. The frescoes that cover the churches are the result of considerable skill. These frescoes are constantly maintained, repaired and restored, and tourists can explore the underground cities and churches.

Cappadocia fairytale journeys

In addition to hot air balloons, tourists have the opportunity to explore the mystical underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymakli, which hide centuries-old secrets. Adventurers enjoy horseback riding through beautiful valleys, while art lovers in the town of Avanos can create their own pottery masterpieces in traditional workshops.

Cappadocia is also one of the most romantic destinations in the world, often chosen for honeymoons. Dinners under the starry sky, magical landscapes and irresistible local specialties, such as testi kebab and Nevsehir manti, make the stay even more special.

The combination of adventure, gastronomy, natural treasures, and magical sunsets makes a visit to Cappadocia a fairytale-like journey.
