Azerbaijan Location
Azerbaijan is an Asian country, a former Soviet republic, located in the Eastern Caucasus region, on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. Bordered by the Caspian Sea and bordered by the Caucasus Mountains, Azerbaijan is often associated with the Middle East. It currently has a population of approximately ten million, about half of whom live in bustling urban centers like Baku.
Best Time to visit Azerbaijan

Seaside promenade
A stroll along the Seaside Promenade is a great way to capture a truly well-deserved prefix. It stretches along the shores of the Caspian Sea, next to one of the largest, new city parks in the world – Denizkenari Milli Park.
The promenade, whose construction began in 1909, was at that time the place where the summer mansions of wealthy oil barons were built. Today, it is the most favorite place of locals and visitors.

During the walk, you can see all the innovative, architectural achievements of modern Baku. One such example is Little Venice of Baku. Located along the promenade, this part of the city was created after the Italian Venice. In addition to the connected canals, Little Venice is characterized by bridges, but also very interesting buildings.

Iceri-Sheher (Baku Old City)
A tour of the capital of Azerbaijan can be continued by exploring one of the biggest attractions of this modern city on the shores of the Caspian Sea. A tour of the old city or inner city, Icheri Sheher, is a must-see attraction.
This part of Baku’s historic core, surrounded by walls, is a labyrinth of alleys made up of converted caravansary houses, mosques, carpet shops, madrasahs, mausoleums, hidden passages and inner courtyards, hammams and the remains of ancient Zoroastrian towers.
Sirvansahova Palace
In December 2000, the old city, including the Palace of the Sirvanshahs and the Maiden Tower, became the first site in Azerbaijan to be classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Palace of the Sirvanshahs is a medieval structure of the Arab Yazid dynasty, which later received Persian influence and ruled the region between the 9th and 16th centuries.
It contains the Divanah courtyard with its old mosques, minarets, caravanserais and baths, as well as the famous Maiden Tower from the 12th century, shrouded in mystery.

Mountain City of Sheki
The second day of our visit to Azerbaijan is reserved for the Greater Caucasus. Driving towards the southern part of the mountains, about 325 km west of Baku, is the city of Sheki. Sheki was known as Nuka until 1968. In Sheki, there are traces of large settlements dating back more than 2700 years.
The history of the creation of the city of Sheki
It was founded by the Iranian Saka people who wandered from the northern Black Sea through the Derbent Pass to the southern Caucasus and from there to Asia Minor in the 7th century BC. They occupied a large part of the fertile land in Transcaucasia in the area called Sakasena.
Sheki was one of the largest cities of the Albanian states in the 1st century. It was the main temple of the ancient Caucasian Albanians, the settlers of today’s Albanians in the Balkans.
In 2019, the historic core of Sheki with the Khan’s Palace and surroundings was protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The older northern part of the city is built on a mountain, while its southern part stretches along the valley of the Gurjan River. Upon arrival, we will visit the Sheki Khans Palace, a unique in its beauty, two-story building, built in the 18th century without a single nail.
Caravan Sarai
Built in the shape of a lock with an enclosed courtyard, the building has a unique entrance door that closes in case of danger, turning it into an impregnable fortress.
Orthodox Church in Kish Village
This village is a unique attraction for the place where there is an ancient Albanian church, shrouded in mystery and surrounded by legends. According to one such legend, the church was built in the 1st century AD, making it one of the first Christian temples in this part of the world.
The church is officially identified as an ancient Albanian church, but some experts suggest that it could also be a Georgian church from the 12th century. Despite different points of view on the origin of the church, the mysterious past of the church attracts the interest of researchers and tourists alike.
Azerbaijani cuisine is based on fresh, local products from nine climate zones, featuring signature dishes such as Shah plov (saffron rice), kebabs, and dolmas, served with traditional black tea and local wine.
Of all the things you can do in Azerbaijan, a delicious Azerbaijani breakfast is highly recommended. A traditional breakfast consists of eggs and various cheeses. Some are fresh, others fermented, and range from artisanal cheese to goat feta. Other dairy products include whipped cream, butter, and sweetened condensed milk.
All of this is served with delicious, freshly baked bread. Dried meats, jam, honey, and even chocolate are also available to sweeten every bite.
Azerbaijan Travel Tips
To enter Azerbaijan, you need a valid passport, an entry visa (unless you fall into one of the exemption categories), and you must travel through open international borders, primarily through Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku.
Time difference is + 3 hours compared to European time or +8 hours compared to Eastern American Time
The Azerbaijani currency is called the Manat (AZN) and is divided into 100 gopikas. 1 $ is about 0.80 AZN
Credit cards can only be used in large supermarkets, mainly in the capital Baku, and in some hotels and banks. In the regions, it is almost impossible to use credit cards.
As for taxi services, they generally do not accept foreign currency, and before the ride itself, it is advisable to agree in advance on the amount you will pay for the ride
Bargaining is common and desirable, especially in markets and bazaars.
