Way to make a Travel > World Tours > Tip for big savings: How to find a cheaper hotel or apartment
Everyone who loves to travel also loves comfortable accommodation — preferably at the best price. Since we travel often ourselves, we are constantly surprised by the differences in accommodation prices. That’s why we show you a trick on how to find a cheaper hotel or apartment that suits you and avoid unnecessary waste of money.
The first rule: don’t stick to one platform!
The same apartment or hotel on one platform costs, for example, €70 per night, and on another €30 (add up how much difference that is over 7 nights!). How is that possible? It’s simple — some sites take big margins, some less, some have better terms agreed upon, and some almost none because they are financed differently, so they can offer you much cheaper accommodation.
Therefore, when you find a hotel you like through a platform (Booking, Agoda, Orbitz, Travel Up, Expedia, Vrbo, etc…), don’t book it right away.
Do the following first – Step-by-step trick
Open Trivago — search for accommodation and enter the same hotel (or destination/city you are traveling to), the same dates and number of people.
Trivago searches all platforms in seconds and lists how much the same hotel is on which platform
Choose the most affordable platform offered by Trivago and book through it. The savings are huge!Savvy sailors know to arrive at the harbor early and to embark as soon as possible. While others are waiting for their luggage to be taken to the stateroom, well-practised cruisers are moving from deck to deck, swiftly securing the best of everything.
Few Booking examples
If you don’t have a hotel already selected, but you need a list of the most affordable ones, do the following:
- Enter the city/destination you are planning to travel to, date and number of people and then click search.
- After that, you can sort from the cheapest, low to high. Choose price ascending at the menu on the top, and you will immediately see the most affordable offers.
- If you only want hotels or only apartments or only with breakfast, half board or all inclusive — include those options in the filter section on the left top corner of the platform.
This way you make big savings in a few clicks. Trivago is proven and secure — one of the world’s most famous travel platforms (over 100 million users per month), so don’t worry, book through it and grab the best price.
Price difference examples
Most people use Booking.com because it’s the most popular, but it’s also often the most expensive. That’s not to say it shouldn’t be checked and compared — but to us, it was more expensive than the others in most cases.
Dubai — Al Jawhra Garden Hotel
We compared two random hotels (Dubai and Istanbul) for 7 nights:
Trivago: €429 for 7 nights ·
Booking: €623 —
same hotel, same room!
The difference is even more drastic: Trivagor €350 · Booking €711 — all exactly the same, 7 nights with breakfast and the option to cancel! (up to €361 difference)
Our example — accommodation in Tenerife
On our trip to Tenerife the saving was €135 for 5 nights — for the same accommodation, just because we compared the platforms.
More tips for cheaper accommodation
- Sort by cheapest + filters. “Low to high” + filter on breakfast/rating gives you the best price-quality ratios.
- Choose free cancellation. Book early with “free cancellation“, so if the price drops, you can rebook cheaper without risk.
- Check the price on the hotel’s website. Smaller, family hotels are sometimes the cheapest directly.
- Longer stay and off season. Weekly prices and off-peak times can be significantly lower.
