History of the Metekhi Church
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary of Metkhi is one of the oldest built in Tbilisi. This temple of God was built in the 6th century during the reign of King Vakhtang I Gorgasali.
After the church schism between the Armenians and Georgians at the beginning of the 7th century, Catholicos Kirion transferred the relics of the saint from the small town of Tsurtavi to the Metekhi temple.
The relics of the Holy Queen are located in the deacon’s place. It is known that Queen Tamar adorned the body of the Blessed Queen with gilded clothes and paid her special honor. Previously, the temple had its own icon of the Virgin Mary carved in the 17th century, which was lost during the invasion of the Kyzylbas.
According to legend, the Metekhi rock was supposed to be the place of torture of Abo, who is the patron saint of Tbilisi. A small church was built at the foot of the rock in his name.
Mother of Georgia
It was founded by the Iranian Saka people who wandered from the northern Black Sea through the Derbent Pass to the southern Caucasus and from there to Asia Minor in the 7th century BC. They occupied a large part of the fertile land in Transcaucasia in the area called Sakasena.
Cable Car Tbilisi by katarzyna javaheri
After visiting the church, we recommend a cable car ride to enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city. Upon arrival, a tour of one of the symbols of the city follows.
“Mother of Georgia” or Mother of Kartli is a monumental statue, a symbol of the Georgian national character: the statue holds a glass of wine for guests in one hand and a sword for enemies in the other.
The accessories of the sculpture, a glass of wine and a sword, are an expression of the history of the city of Tbilisi, endless battles with enemies and relations with guests who came with good feelings.
The statue was erected in 1958 to mark the 1500th anniversary of the city. According to the original decision, a wooden allegorical statue would temporarily adorn the capital, although this decision was later changed. Therefore, in 1963, the texture of the wood was covered with aluminum so that the sculpture would not be damaged.
In 1997, the old statue was replaced with a new one. It offers a stunning view at every step, and it is a special pleasure at night when the lights of the city shine below.

Bathrooms
After the tour, you can continue towards the part of the city where there are domed sulfur baths “baths” on hot sulfur springs, they are located underground and are the trademark of the city and one of its most striking attractions. At one time A.S. himself bathed in them. Puskin, who considered this place the best of all he had ever visited.
The baths, reminiscent of the scenery of a movie about Central Asia, are gathered in one place and covered by a huge dome. The most popular are the Royal Bathers and the Orbelians.
Mtskheta
The last day of the visit to Georgia is planned for a visit to the Georgian Stonehenge and Mtskheta, a destination adored by travelers from all over the world. We visit a city that carries a great historical experience. A city where you will see a culture that combines the Macedonian, Persian and Roman Empires.
Jvari Monastery Church
Before Mtskheta itself, we pass by the Holy Cross Monastery of Jvari from the 6th century, a monument that tells about the history of Christianity in Georgia. The view from the monastery will positively surprise you.
We arrive in Mtskheta, which is the former capital of Georgia, which speaks of its greatness and importance for the Georgian people. Architecture, local markets, handmade ceramics, authentic colors, greetings from the local population and delicious food will make you fall in love with Mtskheta.

” A wonderful morning tour! It’s the perfect length for these visits and allows you to keep on investigating this amazing city afterwards. Time well spent and completely worth it. The tour was entertaining, and it’s definitely worth booking the option that includes the Georgian wine tasting. Mariam was a fantastic guide – so lovely and helpful. She gave us excellent restaurant recommendations, and the one we tried was phenomenal. Highly recommended!”
To book a hotel in Georgia, use Trivago, a well-known multi-platform booking engine. The Kazbegi Hotel in Stepantsminda offers breathtaking views of the peaks, as do private homes and resorts in the Kakheti wine region.
Book early: Mountain accommodations have limited availability during the peak summer hiking season and the peak winter ski season.
Guesthouses: In more remote areas (like Ushguli), family-run guesthouses often offer breakfast and dinner.
Check if your property offers airport transfers or local 4×4 transportation, as some routes in the Upper Caucasus require rugged vehicles.
Georgia has such a rich blend of history, landscapes, and warm hospitality, and your post brings that charm through beautifully. The way you highlight its culture and scenic beauty makes it feel wonderfully inviting.
