By Cruise Ship – To get to St. Kitts by cruise ship, book an Eastern or Southern Caribbean itinerary that docks at Port Zante in the capital, Basseterre. Major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Princess, regularly stop at this dedicated terminal.

St Kitts & Nevis Climate

St. Kitts enjoys a tropical maritime climate, characterized by warm and humid weather year-round. Temperatures typically range between 24°C and 30°C. The dry, cool season runs from February to May, while the hot, humid season (with a higher risk of hurricanes) runs from June to November. Constant trade winds help maintain comfortable temperatures.

Best time to visit Twin Island

The best time to visit St. Kitts is from December to April, when the weather is dry, clear, and pleasant, ideal for enjoying the beaches and hiking. February to May are generally the driest months, although late spring (May-June) offers better deals and fewer tourists before hurricane season.

History of St Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis, the smallest sovereign state in the Americas, was originally inhabited by the Kalinago before becoming the first British and later French colony in the Caribbean. Known as the “mother colony” of the West Indies, it became a thriving sugar-producing center before gaining independence in 1983 and developing a tourism industry. Nevis has a unique history, particularly marked by the early emergence of a large, landowning middle class after independence. It is particularly famous for its 18th-century Bath Hotel, considered the first luxury hotel in the Caribbean and built near natural hot springs.

Getting around Basseterre

Arriving in the heart of the gracefully revived capital, Basseterre, you can walk right off the ship and into the town. Hurricanes in the late 1990s took their toll on the terminal, but it is up and running with plenty of duty-free shops, restaurants and a casino. As one of the oldest cities in the Eastern Caribbean, it is an important commercial center with British and French colonial buildings, lively markets, and easy access to beaches and historic sites like Independence Square.

Dependent on sugar and tourism, the astute islanders have restored many of Basseterre’s gingerbread-trimmed public buildings and homes to their former glory, giving the palm-filled town an ‘olde worlde’ charm.

Independence Square, a former slave market and now an attractive park surrounded by 18th-century houses, is particularly worth a look. Also worth a visit is the Circus traffic intersection on Fort Street, with a clock-tower of elaborately-worked cast  iron in the center. You can watch it all from the balcony of one of Basseterre’s liveliest restaurants Ballahoo, well-known for its spare ribs.

Places of interest in St Kitts & Nevis

Wandering through the backstreets off Bay Road, you’ll find goats and chickens  and roadside stalls selling fish, fruit and flowers. The town has a few galleries stocked with good-quality  art, crafts and antiques. The best local buys are leather and cotton goods, spices, pottery and sea opal jewelry. Fort Street and Liverpool Row are good places for unusual finds. Those who prefer brand  name shopping may find something in the Pelican Shopping Mall.

Saint Kitts Scenic Railway

A 49-kilometer narrow-gauge railway encircles Saint Kitts, an island often shrouded in clouds, where sugarcane fields stretch to the edge of the jungle surrounding Mount Liamuiga. Built between 1912 and 1926 to transport sugarcane to the sugar mill on Basseterre, the railway is now back in operation. A comfortable double-decker train allows passengers to circumnavigate the island in just a few hours.

Local area of St Kitts

Driving westward from Basseterre, you’ll come to Romney Manor, 2.4 hectares of glorious gardens containing the ruins of an old sugar plantation, an ancient bell tower and a tree believed to be more than 350 years old. In the grounds of the plantation is the Caribelle Batik Factory in Port Zante, where you can see hand-printed fabrics being made, using a traditional Indonesian process.

Brimstone Hill by maxamillion32

Brimstone National Park

National Park Brimstone Hill, home to a small museum, is further up the road and offers great views of two volcanic cones, Saint Eustatius and Saba to the northwest. The British called it the “Gibraltar of the West Indies” until the French occupied it for nearly a year in 1782. For lunch, head to Rawlins Plantation Inn on the island’s northern slopes, with beautiful gardens, or Ottley’s Plantation Inn on the Atlantic side, which has a spring-water pool and jungle walking trails. Both are converted sugarcane plantations.

Contrasting Beaches

For a day at the beach, head to Frigate Bay, a long, wide stretch of fine white sand a few kilometers southeast of Basseterre, a stark contrast to the black sand beaches further north.

Beyond lies Friar’s Bay, a small inlet where you can swim in both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Known for its tranquil, sheltered, and shallow turquoise waters, it is a favorite spot for families, locals, and those seeking a more relaxed alternative to the island’s more bustling beaches. Calm, clear water makes it ideal for swimming. The beach features soft sand with some scattered shells.

Frigate Bay South Beach

Turtle Beach, located near the tip of the peninsula, is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers, offering opportunities for diving, kayaking, and windsurfing. Speedboats allow you to travel further along the coast or to the neighbouring island of Nevis.

Food and Places to Eat

St. Kitts’ culinary scene is a vibrant mix of Caribbean, Creole and British influences, with a focus on fresh seafood, spices and local rum. Must-try dishes include goat stew, salted fish with corn cakes, clam fritters and roti. Recommended dining spots include Shipwreck Beach Bar, Marshall’s and the Spice Mill. Beware of the island’s speciality hot peppers sauce, if you don’t have an asbestos tonque.

St Kitts Events & Festivals

The Saint Kitts Music Festival is a carefully curated four-night event in June. It brings together prominent Caribbean musicians from a variety of musical genres. Other notable events include the T20 Caribbean Premier League cricket tournament in September, the Johnnie Walker St. Kitts Open Golf Tournament in May, and various cultural festivals.

Nevis

Tiny island of Navis is separated from Saint Kitts by a 2-mile strait. Ferries regularly leave Basseterre for the 45-minute 20-km journey to Nevis, where Horatio Nelson married Fanny Nisbet in 1787. The trip is an experience in itself, you can travel in style or share the cargo boat with livestock and sacks of vegetables.

The ferry docks in Charlestown, which has beautifully restored, pastel-tinted, gingerbread-trimmed  houses with tropical gardens. Here  street vendors will tempt  you with fruit wines made from gooseberry, sorrel and pawpaw (papayas).

Tourists usually buy colorful batik and handicrafts at the Cotton Ginnery on the waterfont.  For a lovely beach and a good lunch, take a taxi to Pinney’s Beach, a short hop from Charlestown.

Some cruise lines offer excursions to Nevis, which may include a rainforest hike to Nevis Peak. If you prefer to go independently, do check the return ferry schedules to allow plenty of time to get back to the ship.

Our Favorite St Kitts Tour

The St Kitts Scenic Railway links up to the cruise lines timetables and is a wonderful way to see the island. For those wanting to see more, taxi drivers offer tours of the island too and can include a stop for lunch. Check the rates  listed in the cruise terminal, as they are not displayed in cabs, and establish the fare with the driver first.

St. Kitts Scenic Train Experience

” The train was a fun ride. It was a good way to see the countryside and learn some history of St Kitts. We rode in the open air top part of the car, the lower part was enclosed and air conditioned. We were fortunate not to have rain, and the constant breeze kept us comfortable. The beverages served were tasty, and the dancers were an entertaining surprise. The busses to and from the train itsaelf were comfortable and efficient.
