The most magical time of the year has already begun and what better way to get in the holiday spirit than by touring the quaint Christmas markets. We take you to the top six Christmas markets in Germany to get you into the Christmas spirit. From Nuremberg to Rothenburg, these markets are ready to welcome you. Pack your bags and ho-ho-ho!
We start with the sixth place reserved for the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, one of the oldest and certainly most famous Christmas market in Germany and in the world. The Christkindlesmarkt and the festively decorated old town of Nuremberg shine in the splendor of 1000 lights and spacious shopping streets. Culinary specialties on every street corner: original Nuremberg grilled sausages and sweet treats such as gingerbread and speculaas. In the many wooden chalets you can find traditional, often hand-made Christmas decorations. Open daily from 26 November to 24 December from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

In fifth place from the top Christmas markets in Germany is the wonderful Lübeck Christmas market, with its countless lights that give the city a Christmassy look. Stroll through the market rows of chalets selling everything your heart desires, or pop up one Ferris wheel and enjoy a unique winter panoramic view of the entire city. Open daily from 22 November to the end of December from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m0
Fourth place is the Cologne Christmas market located on the center city square, right next to the giant Christmas tree. Around 140 traders gather at the Cologne Christmas market every year to sell many local specialties, such as Cologne mulled wine and liqueur with the matching wine. There is plenty here, and high-quality handicrafts and unusual gift ideas are also on offer. A Christmas stage program ensures evocative entertainment. From November 22nd to December 23rd, the market is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

In third place is the Dresden Striezelmarkt – the oldest Christmas market in Germany. Every year Dresden is transformed into a true Christmas fairy tale in the middle of the historic old town. Visitors can enjoy regional art and specialties, Erzgebirge wood art, Lusatian printing materials, Pulsnitzer gingerbread and Herrnhuter sterne and of course the original Dresdner Christstollen. 240 traders and showmen offer their goods here. Open daily from 22 November to 2 December from 10 am to 9 pm
A second place is the Old Rothenburg Christmas Market ob der Tauber. The small, cozy Christmas market is located in the middle of the old town and is considered one of the most beautiful in the region. From November 26th, visitors have the opportunity to stroll through the market square, the green square and the church square and feast on magically scented delicacies for four weeks. Many craftsmen and traders offer their goods in the small markets. The highlight of the Old Rothenburg Christmas Market is the annual setting of the giant Christmas tree.

BHI number one recommended Christmas market in Germany is the romantic Ravenna Gorge Christmas market near Freiburg. This cozy market is impressively located under a railway viaduct. Its Christmas atmosphere is particularly impressive in the winter evenings when the colorful lights in the gorge shine. A glass of mulled wine is served between the decorated wooden stalls. Selected arts and crafts and Black Forest specialties offer something for every taste. The Christmas market is open on November 26th, Friday to Sunday between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. However, the visit is not free and you need to buy a ticket online in advance. The tickets are usually available in October and they get sold out very fast.
